[Martha Wetherbee Basket Workshop]

Here are some snapshots from the wonderful workshops with Martha Wetherbee we had here in St. Louis over Memorial Day weekend. Martha offered 2 classes, one a Nantucket Beverage Tray and the other a Shaker Cat Head woven over a special puzzle mold. To see the baskets we made in 2001 scroll to the bottom of the page.

Nantucket Beverage Tray

May 27-28, 2000

Martha demonstrates inserting the staves.

Annette works on her stave spacing.

Susan and Anne begin weaving their baskets.

Cindy and Debbie weave up the sides.

Martha helps level Cindy's basket.

Martha and Alan help everyone get started on their evening projects.

Tina and Susan just can't stop.

The next day Martha demonstrates fitting the rims.

Almost done, Dorothy lashes her basket.

Tina lashes as Martha and Anne discuss Nantucket basket history.

Final step! Alan helps Dorothy place her scrimshaw medallion.

The finished basket.

Two days of hard work and plenty of smiles as the baskets turned out great. (That's me on the left.)

Some of the goodies Martha and Alan brought along.

Shaker Puzzle Cat Head

May 29, 2000

Martha demonstrates laying out the base.

Thinning the tips of the weavers.

Beginning the weaving and gathering the corners.

Once started the weaving goes pretty fast.

Laurie's almost to the top of the mold.

Lynn and the others finish up their weaving.

After drying, the baskets are packed.

Martha demonstrates fitting and lashing the rims.

Dorothy and Susan (all the way from Idaho) are ready to come back next year.

The finished basket.

Here is the special project I worked on for the 3 days, a large Shaker apple basket.

A full day of work and fun ends with everyone taking home a prized finished basket. (That's me on the left with my new apple basket.)
